My Tumultuous Week with Age of Adz

When Sufjan Stevens' new album, Age of Adz, leaked last Saturday, I was initially quite disappointed. I found the songs to be cluttered and melodically barren; the lush orchestration of his earlier masterful albums was abandoned for glitchy and, I think its fair to say, rather obnoxious electronics. Sure there were traditional Sufjanic elements at play, but they were buried under a snow storm of chaos, as if the entire album had been remixed by an overly-enthusiastic amateur fanboy.

I will be the first to admit that I was wrong. Completely wrong. I'm not going to sit here and tell you this album is a "grower" - I simply missed it. In fact, Age of Adz could very well be the album of the year. It's a complex masterpiece of composition, overflowing with emotion and existential angst.

Over the past year we all rolled our eyes (or wiped tears from them) as we read interviews with arguably the most important musician of our generation, bemoaning his creative crises:
"I’m wondering: what am I doing? What is a song even? I’m questioning, what’s the point of a song? Is a song antiquated? Does it have any power any more? The format itself — a narrative song with accompaniment — is really beyond me now."
One can speculate whether these musings had direct affect on Adz or not, but if the songs on the album could be described in one word it would be "power." Probably the most jarring moment in the more than hour long record comes in "I Want to Be Well", a song that begins with Sufjan's standard whimsical air, only to deteriorate into a cycle of Stevens passionately declaring he's not "fucking around" - a phrase that certainly caused a few of the troubadour's more faithful fans to spew their morning cheerios across the kitchen table. It is this raw energy that really pushes Sufjan to new heights. His soul, previously buried under myriad layers of history, narrative, biblical allegories and the like, finally makes an appearance - and it's a bit more tortured than we ever imagined.

Yes, Sufjan is singing in the first person. In this context, the chaotic, unnerving electronics that float through the album take on a whole new meaning. They are the loose edges, the "distractions" that he warns us so eagerly to avoid on the 25-minute album closer, "Impossible Soul" ("Don't be distracted, don't be distracted now.") On a far less metaphorical level, his fusion of whimsical folk pop (that he nearly single-handedly pioneered back in the 2000's) with pulsing aquatic electronics creates an utterly unique and original sound. After several listens, the once prominent bleeps and whistles begin to melt into the overall aural texture and the layers become less annoying and much more like the wall of sound they are meant to be.

The best songs, "Vesuvius", "All for Myself", "I Want to Be Well", and "Impossible Soul", close out the album with beautifully arranged melodic structures recalling the atmosphere of Michigan and even some of his more medieval Christmas arrangements. It's a stretch of music that could easily stand with some of the best records of the past few decades.

It's hard to say how this album will be accepted critically. In many ways, it shares similarities with Kanye West's 808 and Heartbreak; both albums stand out as bold reinterpretations of the artists' styles and musical tendencies. Its an album meant for your full attention. Highly Recommended.

Shimmering Stars make reverb-drenched, melodic pop songs that range from intimate to epic. They are Canadian, playful and melancholy:

Shimmering Stars are sexually repressed and puritanically correct. But they are eager to share some of their nasty thoughts with you. Not that they feel good about it!

New Music from LOOM

With summer leaving us, fall is LOOMing. It is time to find the warmest blankets and make hot chocolate and stare out of a window at the leaves. You can see them change color and it is beautiful. You have a friend to watch with you. A friend whose presence you barely feel, the faintest of pressures. She sings to you. She picks up a guitar and voices a poem. You listen and watch.

Another great collaboration, this time between Holy Spirits and Gem Club. Somehow peaceful and uncomfortable at the same time, it is incredibly gorgeous. The video, directed by Nathaniel Whitcomb, is chock full or serene images that pair perfectly with the music. These collaborations and more are available via We Get By and you can by the cassette here. I do recommend it!

New Wise Blood Track and Video and Show!

An active week in the world of Wise Blood! First this video for + opener and standout track "Here Comes the Sun".

2 THE BITTER END (K-Ci & JoJo Remix) by Wise Blood

New song "2 The Bitter End" was recently uploaded to the Wise Blood's soundcloud account and turns around and plays with a core sample, as is the Wise Blood way. It is the second song released since the first EP dropped (both of which begin with the number "2" in the title...). Sensing a theme here. Christopher will also be playing CMJ very soon, so if you are fortunate enough to go, please do!

Pretty much the antithesis of the whole chill-wave/beach-pop vibes we've been jammin to. Im for it. See them in Seattle on the 1st of November if you like. Rock n Roll, brother.

The Tallest Man on Earth-Sometimes the Blues Is Just a Passing Bird

Swedish native Kristian Matsson, a.k.a. The Tallest Man on Earth is my new love. He has just released his new EP, "Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird" on iTunes, with a hard copy available elsewhere on November 9th via Dead Oceans. The EP is beautiful and melancholy and has been playing on repeat on my ipod for the last week or so with very few interruptions. My favorite song is "The Dreamer." Listen below.

The Holy Forest - Two Bicycles

From Bandcamp:

The Holy Forest is a record that I wrote and recorded in under 24 hours. I knew I wanted to make something that was along the same lines as the Valerie EP, but with a bit more song based. Where I wanted to keep Valerie more of an instrumental affair, this record features a lot more vocals and percussion.

The idea behind the record was to tell the story of a piece of land that was quite dear to my heart. Behind my parent's house was a mountainside forest that was full of wonder and inspiration. One afternoon some friends and I were wandering around it when we came upon a huge clearing, almost 200 feet wide. The trees gave way to huge stalks of uncut grass, and a hidden cove, complete with a looming rock face. People had definitely discovered it before we had, what with the discarded car batteries and rusted out bed frames. Some people saw it as a dump; we saw an oasis. For that summer, this place became my escape. I'd go to the meadow to think, to take in the sun, and to go be imaginative. It instantly became a muse, inspiring me to write countless songs and other works.

Once the summer ended, and I left home to go back to school, my parents told me that the forest was being cut down to make way for a housing development. A total Fern Gully experience. I was saddened to think that a place of such mystery and wonder would be replaced with sheer efficiency and logic. People need places to live right? Perhaps, but at what cost.

So over the span of four months, I saw glimpses of what was once a beautiful place, turn into a pile of dirt. The album cover is a collage of a picture of the once full forest, and one of my friend Adam standing over the wasteland it became.

This record is the story of this forest, as told by the trees themselves.

I hope you enjoy this record, and I hope it inspires you to find a place of wonder.

Beat Connection Sign to Tender Age!

Congratulations to Seattle locals and BCB favorites and friends Beat Connection for signing a deal with Tender Age records, an imprint of Moshi Moshi (home of Hot Chip and Lykke Li among many others). To celebrate, here is a video from Camp Revival shot right down the street from me! The video includes some friendly discussion starring Reed and Jordan leading into an excellent rendition of Surf Noir standout track "Silver Screen". From Camp Revival:
Climbing up to the attic space where Beat Connection’s equipment was set up, the band’s sound made more and more sense to me. They are basically practicing in the clouds, overlooking the entire U-District; it was incredible. After a quick sound check, grilled meats and a healthy amount of beer we started the camera and caught part one of the Beat Connection series.
From Tender Age look forward to a revised version of Surf Noir and a "few other goodies" soon. Good work boys! Congratulate them yourselves here.

Owen Pallett: A Swedish Love Story

Owen Pallett, previously performing and recording under his moniker Final Fantasy, has had quite an eventful year. Releasing his fantastic album Heartland to critical acclaim (including a healthy dose from us), Pallett doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. Enter: A Swedish Love Story.

The four song EP is set to be released September 28. Stylistically, the album follows directly in the footsteps of Heartland. Pallett layers orchestral whimsy atop driving pop rhythms, his voice soaring on top of it all. The first track, "A Man With No Ankles" would have fit perfectly on Heartland. The other three, however, tone down the rhythm in favor of Andrew Bird-ish plucking and slow gorgeous melodies. The tracks taken as a whole are certainly some of Pallet's most accessible and melodic songs to date.

The drama-student angst that characterized much of Final Fantasy's catalog has been abandoned in favor of confident and mature songwriting. The shift marks a recent musical trend in which young, creative and rather ambitious artists are abandoning the weird and directing their genius towards the complex craft of pop music (Animal Collective, Beach House and Deerhunter being the most notable examples). Some of the greatest musical acts of the 20th century (Gershwin, Miles Davis, Beatles, Beach Boys) were motivated by a similar desire to blend high and low art. Owen Pallet is certainly pushing his way into the spotlight.

Soft Cat - "It Won't Be Long" Video

[via]

Though I posted about Soft Cat late last year, I find their songs as mesmerizing as ever. Fortunate am I, then, to find this lovely animated video for the wonderful "It Won't be Long". Currently signed to Baltimore's Friends Records, you can by the cassette single entitled Wildspace at Soft Cat's bandcamp here. About the album:
Any concentration of wilderness, growth, or life contained in a surviving ecosystem located in an urban setting is known as wild space. It is a non-domesticated area existing and dwelling as arcane emptiness. Wild space creates fear from the unknown yet gives context to conformability. Organisms grow and cultivate while going unnoticed. Wild space serves as the in between spaces in our lives.

New Radio Dept. - "The New and Improved Hypocrisy"

We at BCB loved The Radio Dept.'s 2010 offering Clinging to a Scheme so we are obviously thrilled at the appearance of a new song. "The New and Improved Hypocrisy" is soft-spoken as is the Swedish way but we have never had any problem with all things Swedish. Subtle melodies and atmospheric instrumentations back the rather biting politically charged lyrics: "We don't want democracy/ we have our way around it". Ouch.

Olof Arnalds - "Crazy Car" Video

I have liked Olaf Arnalds for a few years now since her 2007 album Vi Og Vi, which featured hushed folk songs in the vain of Vashti Bunyan. Her new album Innundir Skinni continues the lovely and intimate songwriting. Arnalds voice is half the intrigue and like other notable female vocalists, Bjork and Joanna Newsom, this may be a love it or hate it situation. Anyway I love it. Scott posted the video for the title track a bit ago and now there is one for (the rather uplifting) "Crazy Car". The video basically depicts the two vocalists singing with some scattered images thrown in. After all, "what's wrong with vanity?"

Boxer/Briefs #7

-William Burroughs interviews Jimmy Page

-The Atlantic considers Bob Dylan

-(My favorite) N+1 has a brilliant consideration of Hip-Hop as a misrepresented genre and of the general state of contemporary culture:
One reason hip-hop reached the masses like it did is that no other music better predicted or embodied the forms that postindustrial cultural consumption would take. Most casual hip-hop listeners, for all the handwringing about their being influenced, do not actually listen to rap lyrics. They listen to the beats, and what hip-hop’s beats suggest is a cultural world in which you are completely surrounded by reproductions of culture, in which culture never stops quoting itself in bits and fragments, in which sequels and remakes depend on the audience’s familiarity with the original documents.

Summer is ending and the weather is starting to get sleepier and cozier. Fight Bite would like to soundtrack the transition. A Short Catalogue of Recent Kanye Rumblings

Kanye West's performance at the VMA's the other day made me remember that there are several things I have been meaning to post. Since his return to performance, short video release, and recitation at twitter and facebook Kanye has under-convincingly performed one of the most promising tracks, lyrically speaking, called "Mama's Boyfriend."

On a better note, he has released a remix for the excellent track "Power" featuring Jay-Z and Swizz Beats (who work well on their own too). The remix starts off normally enough with a (Taylor Swift name dropping) verse from Jay but then we get a new (lesser but still good) verse from Kanye wherein he gets political ("bring out troops back from Iraq/ keep the troops out of Iran) and drops a couple bars "in Islam". From there the track completely shifts and brings you back to the 90s ("I've got the power"). Kanye offers a few more verses demonstrating his ability to shift modes at the drop of a beat.

"Monster" is a song that I didn't really 'get' at first. Its a kind of seedy Raekwon-feeling back-beat that lets the actual rapping take precedent. Once you focus on the rapping however, the fact that Kanye works "sarcophagus" into his verse becomes entirely apparent. And then, of course, Nicki Minaj completely owns the track managing to sound like an angry schizophrenic thesaurus ("all up in the bank with a funny face/ and if Im fake I ain't noticed cause my money ain't!"). The track definitely took on an unprecedented intensity at Jay-Z's Yankee stadium performance this week. These people already know the words!

(For more of this incredible show including a performance of the "Power" remix, see here).

"See Me Now" is a definitely radio grabber. A summer feel good, cruising with the top down sort of track. Kanye gives us a few ringers ("Im Socrates/ but my skin more chocolaty" or "if you fall on the concrete/ that's your ass fault"). Beyonce attacks the song with her ferocious vocal prowess. The track clocks in at a little over six minutes and maybe drags on a little too long. "See Me Now" and the lustful rumination, "Devil in a New Dress," mark the weaker releases from the recent Kanye-internet complex. Both have their moment but would probably work better in the flow of an album.

And of course there is "Runaway" which West debuted at the VMA's (and which it looks like is the title of Kanye's new album?). It seems that the CD quality versions have been taken down but I have a demo version linked here. The lovable refain of the song; "Let's have a toast for the douchebags". Now we get the self-deprecating Kanye...Kan-yay! The recorded track is pensive and brooding but the VMA version (also the VMA closer) just feel really sad. Kanye invites us to hate him as much as he does. I don't think I really want to. Nice move Ye. Pusha T gives his verse and Kanye closes it out with a an auto-tuned interlude. Worth seeing.

Sea Oleena - "Island Cottage"

From Montreal, Charlotte Oleena a.k.a. Sea Oleena makes dreamy folk-inspired pop music that sounds like music Laura Gibson would make if she joined Memoryhouse. She has two EPs on her bandcamp although the self-titled one has more produced versions of all the song on the earlier Smudges. Oleena writes consistently laid back songs featuring on-and-off percussion and really simple but effective song dynamics. Each song rises and falls making the albums feel like watching a pendulum swing in slow motion for an hour. Perfect for late summer cloudy days.

Young Hunting - "Into Yr Mind"

Quiet Lights - Free EP

Quiet Lights fit right into the Twin Sister/Memoryhouse female lead dream pop scene (is that a scene?) but they definitely have their own take. On their free three song sampler they manage to be both consistent and diverse. Unlike other dream poppers, Quiet Lights feature a much more prominent use of drums ("No More Canyons") and somewhat of a post-rock influence ("We Live in Balloons"). "Quiet Truth, Weapon Thrown" is a quietly triumphant slow-builder that grows intense without giving up serenity.
